Back to the Future — Summer 2014 Sunglasses Trends Recall ’50s, ’60s and ’80s Glam

Ray Ban
Insight Eyecare’s entire inventory of nonprescription sunglasses is half-off June 27 through July 3. (Offices are closed July 4.) Shown here: Ray-Ban aviators with green lenses.

If classic sunglass styles are your thing — mirrored aviators, midcentury mod cat-eyes, or the trusty Wayfarer — summer 2014 is your season. Timeless shades are hot but the styles have been updated to reflect an ongoing obsession with color, luxe touches, and whatever celebrities are currently sporting.

Old is New Again

Wayfarers were one of the coolest styles of the 1980s, and like many fashion expressions from that decade, they are back with a Rambo-like vengeance. According to Lucky Magazine, “they’re the ultimate unisex, looks-good-on-pretty-much-every-face-shape shades.”

Aviators are also getting a boost from the trend toward more sporty looks in [pullquote align=”left”]Insight Eyecare’s semiannual Half-Off Sunglasses Sale runs June 27 through July 3.[/pullquote]high fashion. They, too, flatter just about every face. Either of these styles with mirrored lenses lets you double your fashion quotient (think reflective  colors like blue, green, or pinkish-amber vs. true mirrors).

Sunglasses are now one of the staples of fashion designer lines and frequently appear on the catwalk. Color blocking (or using two contrasting colors) is a clothing trend that’s crossed over into eyewear. Frames in juicy candy-colored hues are another fun trend, and bold white frames that set off sun-kissed skin are still going strong after several seasons.

Celebrities and Selfies

As always, the rich and famous are leading the way in sporting super-stylish sunnies — and influencing what’s popular among the masses. Cat’s eyes, embellished or eccentric temples, and large lenses cover the eyes of some of the most photographed people in the world. But we’re all in the spotlight in the age of Instagram, so don’t hesitate to snap a few selfies to show off your favorite sunglasses.

Sunglasses are a relatively inexpensive way to try out a trend and update your look; more important, this season’s sunglasses can help safeguard

your eye health for life — if you know what to look for. Though a “100% UV” label is usually a reliable safety indicator, mislabeling and fraud aren’t unheard of. At Insight Eyecare, we can test and measure you’re the UV protection performance of your sunglasses, and if you are in the market for a new ones, we can help you choose the right pair, either prescription or nonprescription, for your lifestyle, summer activities, and personal style.

Now is a good time to buy. From June 27 through July 4, Insight Eyecare’s entire inventory of sunglasses — including sport and prestige lines like Costa del Mar and Prada — is on sale for half off.

Insight Eyecare stocks the brands and styles shown but not necessarily these specific SKUs.
