Children Should Have a Back-to-school Eye Exam — and for a Limited Time, Local Doctor Will Also Examine Their Doll or Stuffed Animal so Kids Don’t Have to Go It Alone.

July 18, 2011 — Back-to-school season is right around the corner, and besides notebooks, pens and all the supplies needed to equip a child for success, it’s also a good time to schedule an eye exam to identify any vision problems that may interfere with learning.

Dr. Jeff Pinkerton of Craig Eye, a division of Insight Eyecare with offices in Kilgore and White Oak, is holding a back-to-school event now through Sept. 15 featuring 20 percent off eye exams for families without vision coverage, and as a treat for the kiddos, free eye exams for dolls and stuffed animals.

One in four schoolchildren has an undetected or untreated vision problem, according to the American Optometric Association. Good vision is critical to academic success. It has been estimated that as much as 80 percent of children’s learning occurs through visual input. When a child’s vision is suboptimal, his or her performance in school and sports can suffer.

“I advise parents not to put off an eye exam until school starts because children fall behind and their grades and self-esteem suffer if they start off the school year at a disadvantage,” Dr. Pinkerton says.

Dr. Pinkerton has children of his own and knows a trip to the doctor’s office can be scary. When kids bring their dolls and have them “go first,” it eases some of their apprehension.

Craig Eye, a division of Insight Eyecare, has offices in Kilgore and White Oak. Dr. Pinkerton is seen by appointment only. Patients can schedule a time in Kilgore by calling (903) 984-3101 or in White Oak by calling (903) 295-2015.
